This book examines the new and growing phenomenon of adult-onset sub-threshold eating disorders, particularly in midlife women (age 30 and over.). It focuses on women from their thirties to their sixties whose disordered eating patterns usually go unrecognized because they don't fit the clinical definitions of anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating disorder. Yet their relationship with food is anything but healthy, as these women may severely restrict their food intake, binge, purge, exercise excessively, or abuse laxatives. These disordered eating problems often arise as women struggle to cope with a combination of midlife stresses, including the hormonal changes of menopause, increasing financial and family responsibilities, and the cultural emphasis on youth and beauty
About the Author
CYNTHIA M. BULIK, PH.D., is the William R. and Jeanne H. Jordan Distinguished Professor of Eating Disorders at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the director of the UNC Eating Disorders Program. She currently resides in Chapel Hill.
NADINE TAYLOR, M.S., R.D., a registered dietitian, is chair of the Women's Health Council of the American Nutraceutical Association. Author of Natural Menopause Remedies and If You Think You Have an Eating Disorder, she lives in Los Angeles, California.
