Girls Who Rocked the World!: Heroines from Sacajawea to Sheryl Swoopes

Girls Who Rocked the World!: Heroines from Sacajawea to Sheryl Swoopes Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

-- Tells the stories of 35 real girls, past and present, from all around the world, who achieved amazing feats and changed history before reaching their twenties

Sparked by Mary Pipher's best-selling Reviving Ophelia, many books are now being published specifically for and about girls. When author Amelie Welden was researching Girls Know Best, she discovered that no book had yet been written on all the amazing girl heroines and their historical achievements. She decided to "rock the world" herself by writing a book that shows how girls have influenced and shaped the history of the world.

Illustrated with both photos and drawings, Girls Who Rocked the World! Includes well-known figures like Anne Frank, Jane Goodall, Helen Keller, and Pocahontas as well as many who aren't as well known. Some of those included are:
-- Phillis Wheatley (U.S., 1700s), a trailblazing poet who was the first black woman to have her works published, at age 17
-- Sacajawea (U.S., 1800s), who led Lewis and Clark's expedition through the then-uncharted wilds of northwest America at age 19
-- Wang Yani (China, current), at age 14 the youngest artist to have a one-person show at the Smithsonian Museum
-- Amatalrauf al-Sharki (Yemen, current), a media personality since the age of 12 who became heavily involved in the women's liberation movement in the Middle East in her late teens

Along with the historical stories are photos and writings of girls from all over America responding to the question "How do you plan to rock the world?" Like its predecessor Girls Know Best, Girls Who Rocked the World! encourages girls to believe in themselves and pursue their dreams.
