Book News Annotation:

This fifth in a series of anthologies of major works of Polish literature for English-speaking students and general readers contains two parts. The first draws from the last four decades of the 19th century, which was dominated by realism inspired by Comte's philosophy. The second part is devoted to the modernist movement known as Young Poland, which emerged in Cracow in the 1890s inspired by the native Romantic tradition and the writings of Schopenhauer and Nietzsche. Nearly half of the some 100 selections are translated into English here for the first time.
