American Naval History: An Illustrated Chronology of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, 1775-Present

American Naval History: An Illustrated Chronology of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps, 1775-Present Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Combing the historical documents and photos, the author has put together one of the most comprehensive studies of the United States Navy and Marine Corps. Stunningly detailed and visually impressive, this is one of the most concise, year-to-year chronologies produced.

Book News Annotation:

This illustrated reference provides year-to-year summaries of events in the history of the US Navy and Marine Corps from the American Revolution onwards. Supported by some 200 b&w photos and illustrations and four indexes, the reference explains the consequences of major events and provides a series of entries to show stages of development and give a sense of continuity. This third edition adds information on the decade from the Gulf War to the turn of the century. The thumbnail sketches lack a direct reference to the small bibliography. Sweetman is retired from the US Naval Academy and is author or coauthor of numerous books on naval history.
