Institutional Failures : Duke Lacrosse, Universities, the Media, and the Legal System

Institutional Failures : Duke Lacrosse, Universities, the Media, and the Legal System Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

The authors of this new collection argue that the many disparate facets of the now-infamous Duke University lacrosse controversy are best understood in the context of the three major socio-legal institutions in which this drama played out: the legal system, the American university, and the news media. These essays consider the role these institutions played in this case, and the lessons it might teach about the appropriate conduct and function of each of them.

Book News Annotation:

Chapter 1 describes the event, which occurred in March 2006: Three Duke University lacrosse players "...were wrongly accused and indicted on charges of sexual assault for the gang rape of an exotic dancer," and the remaining 41 team members were indirectly "tagged as rapists or, at least, as helping to shield rapists." For this volume editor Wasserman (law, Florida International U. College of Law) has led a team of lawyers and journalists to explore how the case developed within the legal system, within the university--in the context of American higher education, and within the news media. An over-zealous prosecutor was the bad guy. Fortunately the outcome afforded justice to the wrongly accused. The intricacies of what happened, the issues, and the institutional reactions provide a rich opportunity for learning. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (
