Book News Annotation:

This small biography, originally printed in 1976, attempts to separate the facts from the legends surrounding the most storied of Irish bare-knuckled boxers. From his birth in Dublin in 1788 to his politically tinged victories over British opponents, to his untimely death and subsequent dismemberment, this volume provides an admiring narrative of the fighter's life, including contemporary popular songs, illustrations and portraits. Special attention is paid to Donnelly's victory over British champion George Cooper at the Curragh of Kildare in 1815 and to the unique artifact of Donnelly's mummified right arm, stolen by grave robbers soon after his death in 1820, studied by medical students, displayed in pubs for nearly two centuries and currently on display at the Gaelic Athletic Association museum at Croke Park, Dublin. Myler is a boxing writer and author of several books on Irish boxing. Distributed by Dufour Editions. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
