Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Ever since Maurice Richard dazzled hockey fans in the 1940s and 1950s, fighting his way to hockey's summits, the issue of discrimination against Quebec hockey players has simmered on. Now an NHL veteran confirms that unless Quebec hockey players are superstars, they are less likely to be drafted than other players in Canada. Using statistics covering nearly 40 years, the discussion shatters tenacious myths such as those claiming that Quebecois players are physically smaller, play poor defensive hockey, and only serve as the best goalies. Looking for solutions, this account proposes a new NHL team for Quebec City and a Quebec national junior team for international events.

Book News Annotation:

By gathering and analyzing statistics covering the past forty years, Sirois, who played in 286 NHL games for the Philadelphia Flyers and Washington Capitals, demonstrates that discrimination against Quebec hockey players has been constant and systemic. Based on these results, he proposes solutions: the return of an NHL team to Quebec City and the creation of a Quebec junior team to participate in international events. This is a translation, with an added epilogue, of the French book appearing in 2009. Professor Marc Lavoie of the University of Ottawa who has also published material on this issue provides the preface. It contains no index or references, but consists primarily of tables showing the number of Quebec hockey players drafted and used by NHL teams from 1970 to the present.
