When I got to the last page of Walk Two Moons, I had to close the book, flip it face up, and re-read it — something I haven't done since I was a kid!! This book is just so good, I didn't want it to end. Thirteen-year-old Salamanca is on a cross-country trip with her grandparents, and she fills up the long hours in the car by telling them a story about a make-believe friend. There isn't much mystery about what is really happening to Salamanca (i.e., what the journey is really about), but it's done so well that Creech doesn't need the usual literary "hooks" to draw you in. This is a book for all ages.

About the Author

Sharon Creech is the author of the Newbery Medal winner Walk Two Moons and the Newbery Honor Book The Wanderer. Her other work includes the novels The Unfinished Angel, Hate That Cat, The Castle Corona, Replay, Heartbeat, Granny Torrelli Makes Soup, Ruby Holler, Love That Dog, Bloomability, Absolutely Normal Chaos, Chasing Redbird, and Pleasing the Ghost, as well as three picture books: A Fine, Fine School; Fishing in the Air; and Who's That Baby? Ms. Creech and her husband live in upstate New York.

This book portrays innocence, simplicity, and feeling of wonder seen through the eyes of protagonist Salamanca Tree Hiddle. It also has sadness and confusion. But it's the mix of all these different emotions as Salamanca searches for her mother that make this one of the most touching books I have ever read. I first read it in high school, and have read it periodically now that I am in my late twenties. Whether you are a young adult or a "full-grown" adult, I would strongly recommend this book.

I read this as part of a children's literature course in college several years ago and it has become one of my favorite books. Despite the simple storytelling, I can't think of many better examples of structure and plot-pacing. And protagonist Sal is unforgettable.
