I teach reluctant high school readers, and my students love this novel. Soto's writing is vivid and powerful, and students can relate to Eddie's experiences as a teenager up against hard times. This novel has everything that an English teacher could wish for -- figurative language, strong characters, symbolism -- and it keeps students turning pages. This is a fantastic novel for any high school classroom!
