Publisher Comments:

More a “how-to-see-it” than a “how-to-do-it” book, this edition explores the disguises and characteristics of shapes and forms in nature, and it examines the visual elements and the relational, moving, and emotive forces that constitute the language of drawing. Clear and objective, this book offers an intensive examination of vital drawing processes and concepts, an in-depth analysis of exceptional drawings by old and contemporary artists, and suggested exercises to enhance the readers' grasp of important measurable and dynamic phenomena. For the art student, the art teacher, the interested amateur, and the practicing artist.

Karen Newhouse, September 28, 2009 (view all comments by Karen Newhouse)
As an artist I am always looking for ways to improve my skills. This book is an exceptional learning tool. The author helps the reader to see the subjects, and uses the sketchbooks of well-known artists to illustrate his points. He does not emphasize a specific method or technique for drawing, but helps the reader develop a way of documenting the world for themselves through drawing.
The book is well laid out, and written with an intermediate audience in mind. Projects are increasingly complex, but not overwhelming. The author assumes some experience in drawing, but does not leave a reader stranded helplessly in the midst of artistic jargon.
I suggest this book to anyone seeking to improve their drawing skills. Dig up a used copy as it is freely available in many printings.
