Once I picked up Information Systems Management in Practice I could not put it down. I read it from cover to cover. It had just the right mix of history, state of the art and what's coming next to read like a favorite novel. I am new to the fields of IT and MIS. I just started seriously discovering the power of computers and the internet two years ago, and I don't have any real management experience but I was able to understand the information presented in this book. For me it really tied a lot of terms and lingo that I've been hearing in the business world and at home over the TV together. What does VOIP mean? Who are the end users? What is the function of the CIO? What does the IS department do?
I especially liked the real case studies of companies that have stayed afloat and progressed embracing the new technology and exemplfying the tenents set forth in this book. I was familiar with all of these companies and had worked for some of them. I was able to compare them with companies that went under like Kroch and Brentano's, Trans World Airlines and G. D. Searle. And compare to sticky companies with their heads just above the water like International Profit Associates d/b/a SMS in Illinois. I highly reccomend this book for anyone at my level who is trying to put the pieces of the new technology puzzle together and I know it will help professionals already working in the fields of IT and MIS to really take command of their jobs. I hope there will be a 9th edition soon.
