Publisher Comments:

Professor William Waterman Sherman just wants to be alone. So he decides to take a year off and spend it crossing the Pacific Ocean in a hot-air balloon the likes of which no one has ever seen. But when he is found after just three weeks floating in the Atlantic among the wreckage of twenty hot-air balloons, naturally, the world is eager to know what happened. How did he end up with so many balloons . . . and in the wrong ocean?

This classic by the Newbery Medal-winning author relates the incredible adventures of Professor William Waterman Sherman, who in 1883 sets off in a balloon across the Pacific. Illustrations.

This book is extremely creative! Engaging for kids and adults alike. It has tons of invention diagrams, wild ideas and fun adventures. I read this for the first time when I was 21 (it was a gift) and I enjoyed it immensely.

I have so many fond memories of my 4th grade teacher reading this book to our class, that when I came across it on the bookshelf now (some 40 years later!) I just had to read it myself. I was NOT disappointed. Like Proust with his madeleine, I was transported. This is a magical mixture of fact and fiction, bits of science and geography, as Professor William Waterman Sherman relates his amazing Krakatoan adventure to the Western American Explorer's Club in San Fransisco. William Pene du Bois tells this story not only in colorful, engaging prose, but he adds an extra dimension with his own pen and ink drawings. I'm off to read this to my neighborhood 4th grade class!
