Publisher Comments:

Nicola Lancaster is spending eight weeks at the Siegel Institute Summer Program for Gifted Youth, a hothouse of smart, articulate, intense teenagers. She soon falls in with Katrina (Manic Computer Chick), Isaac (Nice-Guy-Despite-Himself), Kevin (Inarticulate Composer)...and Battle. Battle Hall Davies is a beautiful blonde dancer, and everything Nic isn't. The two become friends-and then, startlingly, more than friends. What do you do when you think you're attracted to guys, and then you meet a girl who steals your heart?

Review:

"Both controversial and long-awaited, this helps to fill a need that is painfully obvious and introduces a wonderful new voice." Kirkus Reviews

Review:

"Among the better books I have read in recent years..." Deirdre Donahue, USA Today

Review:

"Funny — sad — bitter — poignant — these words ran through my mind while I read Sara Ryan's excellent young adult novel." Nancy Garden, Lambda Book Report

Review:

"Humorous and bittersweet...a must-read..." Teen People

Review:

"This novel will definitely appeal to gifted, articulate teenagers with liberal social values, like the characters in the story. Probably the masses of YA readers, the same ones who feel uneasy around fellow students like Nic, Battle, Isaac, and Katrina, won't feel too comfortable reading about them either." KLIATT

Review:

"What Ryan does so well is cleverly merge two genres...in the process spawning a whole new breed....Young-adult lit has come a long way, baby." Rachel Fudge, Bitch Magazine

Review:

"[S]weet, smart, believable, and charming." The Portland Mercury (Portland, OR)

Review:

"[C]haracters are voiced with near-perfect pitch. The action is equally on target....Ryan handles Nic's confusion about her sexuality and her longing for Battle adroitly." The Oregonian (Portland, OR)

Synopsis:

This ALA Best Book of Young Adults and Lambda Book Award Finalist — a controversial, groundbreaking novel — tells the story of a teenage girl coming to terms with who she really is, despite who she thought she was.

A beautiful book, and hopefully very relevant to today's teens, especially the gifted ones.

My favorite line from the book: "With an elegant hand gesture, she indicates the other tables full of kids, most of whom look like they always sit by themselves at their regular school."

Nicola's narration is interspersed with excerpts from her notes, which fit in seamlessly, and yet allow Ryan to write with two different voices.

I think that Sara Ryan is a good author. I love The Rules for Hearts, it was a wonderful book I wish that I could have read the first book first. I think that Sara Ryan comes up with some creative titles for her books. I read an excerpt from her first book Empress of the World I thought that it was very good.
