Cuba 3RD Edition Between Reform & Revolution

by Louis A Perez

Cuba 3RD Edition Between Reform & Revolution Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Spanning the history of the island from pre-Columbian times to the present, this highly acclaimed survey examines Cuba's political and economic development within the context of its international relations and continuing struggle for self-determination. The dualism that emerged in Cuban ideology--between liberal constructs of patria and radical formulations of nationality--is fully investigated as a source of both national tension and competing notions of liberty, equality, and justice. Perez integrates local and provincial developments with issues of class, race, and gender to give readers a full and fascinating account of Cuba's history, focusing on its struggle for nationality.

This third edition features the latest research on Cuba, including a new chapter on post-Cold War Cuba that covers the years 1995 through 2004. The political chronology has been revised and updated and the extensive bibliography has been both condensed, where necessary, and expanded to highlight the scholarship of the past decade. The book now features photographs throughout and five maps.

Review:

Praise for previous editions:

"A comprehensive, profusely documented treatment that will endure the passage of time."--Robert Hayes, Texas Tech University

"I find this book most impressive. It is a masterful synthesis of Cuban history, thoroughly researched, sensibly argued, and beautifully written."--Silvia M. Arrom, Brandeis University

Review:

Praise for the previous edition:

"Elegant in style, impressive in documentation, balanced in coverage, this book is probably the best single-volume study of Cuban history available....A marvelous synthesis of the latest and best scholarship...a highly recommended addition to any library."--Choice

Although I haven?t yet perused this 3rd edition, I own the second edition, which this edition expands on.
Professor Perez scholarship on Cuba is the highest I have ever witnessed. It surpasses even historian Hugh Thomas' legendary work on Cuba. This book has become the standard by which other books on Cuban history are judged. It's a shame that the covers and binding do not arise to the contents.
