About the Author

Louise Penny is an award-winning journalist who worked for many years for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. Her bestselling first mystery, Still Life, was the winner of the New Blood Dagger, Arthur Ellis, Barry, Anthony, and Dilys awards; and her second, A Fatal Grace, won the 2007 Agatha Award for Best Novel. I found this book recommended by a mystery writer's blog, and was pleased I came across it. It's the first in a series set in a small Canadian town just north of the Vermont border, and filled with wonderfully descriptive passages of the locale as well as introducing some urban Quebecois characters into the otherwise bucolic setting.

I was surprised to learn of the ongoing animosity between the English and French people of Quebec - I didn't realize that still existed and yet the author (who lives in small-town Quebec) notes it frequently, as friction and bias between some of the characters.

I've since read more of this series. Louse Penny, the author, writes in a broad omniscient viewpoint, which may turn off readers who prefer to be close in the minds of just one or two characters. All of the novels are a mix between cozy mystery (small town setting), detective novel (Chief Inspector Gamache leads the investigations), and psychological studies. They proceed at a leisurely pace, which might not appeal to everyone, but seems to fit just right in with the daily life of the residents of Three Pines. I am quite fond of this series - the writing is intelligently applied and so beautiful at times, and LP seems to really know the inner workings of many different types of people and small towns.

Quite cozy. I like to be led around by the author of a detective series, I like to be kept guessing all through the book. While reading this my list of suspects grew and changed and eventually narrowed to the wrong person - making it even more fun to discover the murderer. I'd say that the town is the real star of this book.
