Publisher Comments:

Feeling uninspired? That shouldn’t keep you from creating great design work. Design is not about luck, inspiration, or personal expression. Design is a disciplined pursuit aimed at producing sensible, functional work for clients. In The Design Method, you’ll learn how to create quality design work on a regular basis that consistently pleases your clients using the same method that Creative Director Eric Karjaluoto uses at his creative agency, smashLAB. The Design Method will teach you a proven, repeatable process for solving visual communication problems.

In this book, you will learn:
- Ways to conduct research and gain insight into your clients’ situations
- A process for establishing strategies and plans for your projects
- How to develop a cohesive concept and visual direction for each client/job
- An iterative approach to prototype, test, refine, and produce effective design
- Techniques for presenting and documenting creative work
- Tips for making your design studio operate efficiently and consistently

Synopsis:

The design section of any bookstore offers a variety of beautiful graphic anthologies, heady academic tomes, and monographs of “celebrity” designers. These books often lead us astray by focusing on visuals and theory, instead of how and why designers arrive at outcomes.

The Design Method is a short, functional, relatable book that will help designers clarify their understanding of the nature of design; learn methods for—consistently—creating good design; and find ways to persuade clients to trust in their counsel. It’s not a lofty book. It’s an affordable resource that feels like a sit-down with someone who has real answers to share.

To start, author/creative director Eric Karjaluoto makes the case for why designers need to stop confusing vocation with art and use an organized process to tackle design projects. He then goes on to describe the smashLAB method with advice on how to apply a thoughtful, functional design process to your own design practice.

Opinionated, accessible, and practical, The Design Method provides a treatise for disciplined, rational design and an actionable method for achieving it. Designers who read this book will feel emboldened by a more definitive and logical way of working.

About the Author

Eric Karjaluoto is creative director, and a founding partner, of the creative agency smashLAB. Since 2000, he has helped a broad range of clients including The Vancouver Aquarium, lululemon, athletica, and the University of Minnesota with their strategic, design, and communication challenges. His work has been recognized by TIME, Graphis, and Icograda. In 2007, he spearheaded Design Can Change to unite designers and address climate change. The organization was selected by TIME Magazine for inclusion in its annual Design 100—a list of “the people and ideas behind today’s most influential design.” Eric writes about design at ideasonideas and has spoken at events for the AIGA, SEGD, and GDC for groups ranging from 50 – 6,000. He is the author of Speak Human (Outmarket the Big Guys by Getting Personal).
