Publisher Comments:

A man returns to the town where a baffling murder took place 27 years earlier, determined to get to the bottom of the story. Just hours after marrying the beautiful Angela Vicario, everyone agrees, Bayardo San Roman returned his bride in disgrace to her parents. Her distraught family forced her to name her first lover; and her twin brothers announced their intention to murder Santiago Nasar for dishonoring their sister.

Yet if everyone knew the murder was going to happen, why did no one intervene to stop it? The more that is learned, the less is understood, and as the story races to its inexplicable conclusion, an entire society--not just a pair of murderersis put on trial.

Review:

"As pungent and memorable as a sharp spice, an examination of the nature of complicity and fate...an exquisite performance." The Christian Science Monitor

Review:

"A writer of supernal gifts....It is always a pleasure to be transported to Garcia Márquez's remote and mystical region, to spend a few hours in the grip of an enchanting storyteller." Chicago Tribune

Review:

"This investigation of an ancient murder takes on the quality of a hallucinatory exploration, a deep, groping search into the gathering darkness of human intentions for a truth that continually slithers away." The New York Review of Books

Review:

"Richly sardonic....One could not find more vivid caricature of that lethal blend of machismo, braggadocio, and hypertrophic sense of honor that sullies South American society." John Fowles

Synopsis:

"EXQUISITELY HARROWING . . . . Very strange and brilliantly conceived. . . . A sort of metaphysical murder mystery. . . . The murder will stand among the innumerable murders of modern literature as one of the best and most powerfully rendered."
A mysterious and haunting tale of romance and murder, that begins with the marriage of a man and a woman in love. But when he inexplicably mistreats his beloved on the night of the wedding, he is in turn murdered by her brothers, and we are left with a strange sense of inevitability and passions gone terribly awry.

this, a most perfectly constructed novella, should be used as a textbook of narrative plot & form. set aside some time to read it in one sitting.

Good read...great perspective from en entire town who knew Santiago was going to die, practically watched it happen, and did nothing. Marquez's writing never disappoints.
