Publisher Comments:

Gateway opened on all the wealth of the Universe...and on reaches of unimaginable horror. When prospector Bob Broadhead went out to Gateway on the Heechee spacecraft, he decided he would know which was the right mission to make him his fortune. Three missions later, now famous and permanently rich, Robinette Broadhead has to face what happened to him and what he is...in a journey into himself as perilous and even more horrifying than the nightmare trip through the interstellar void that he drove himself to take!

Just a head's up, I was mislead by the description that this was an omnibus of the four book Heechee saga. It is only the first book Gateway. I was led to believe these works were republished as a two volume set, this one and the short story collection. The book itself, very nice.

Gateway. An asteroid with alien technology on it. Would you risk a lottery that would send you there and possibly open up the wealth of the Universe, or risk unimaginable terror? Unlikely hero Robinette Broadhead does exactly that. On his way to the famous Gateway where he must choose a Heechee spacecraft that will be the right mission to make him his fortune.

After his second, not-so-successful mission, and funds running out he must reluctantly try for one last, and hopefully not fatal, mission. His third try results in a discovery so unimaginable that will make him famous and rich beyond belief. But now Rob Broadhead has to face what has happened to him and what he will do next in an even more horrifying journey than the original nightmare trip through the galactic void that drove him to Gateway in the first place.
