Publisher Comments:

Strong-willed, self-reliant Gertie Nevel's peaceful life in the Kentucky hills was devastated by the brutal winds of change. Uprooted form their backwoods home, she and her family were thrust into the confusion and chaos of wartime Detroit. And in a pitiless world of unendurable poverty, Gertie would battle fiercely and relentlessly to protect those things she held most precious--her children, her heritage...and her triumphant ability to create beauty in the suffocating shadow of ugliness and despair. Books are meant to carry you away to another place and time. Nothing does it as well as the Dollmaker. The characters, descriptions, and dialect of the Appalachian people are all vividly presented through the life of Gertie and her family. It's a touching, at times heartbreaking story of surviving and thriving in hard times. Gertie is trying to raise her family, take care of the finances, and keep her head above water with a husband who is not the best at making decisions. Left to make her own decisions when her husband is paying for his, Gertie learns to put her own needs and the needs of her family above conventional and outdated wisdom. This book was made into a movie with Jane Fonda playing the lead, but nothing compares to the printed page on this one.
