From bestselling, Printz Award-winning author Libba Bray, a desert island classic.

Survival. Of the fittest.

The fifty contestants in the Miss Teen Dream Pageant thought this was going to be a fun trip to the beach, where they could parade in their state-appropriate costumes and compete in front of the cameras. But sadly, their airplane had another idea, crashing on a desert island and leaving the survivors stranded with little food, little water, and practically no eyeliner.

What's a beauty queen to do? Continue to practice for the talent portion of the program - or wrestle snakes to the ground? Get a perfect tan - or learn to run wild? And what should happen when the sexy pirates show up?

Welcome to the heart of non-exfoliated darkness. Your tour guide? None other than Libba Bray, the hilarious, sensational, Printz Award-winning author of A Great and Terrible Beauty and Going Bovine. The result is a novel that will make you laugh, make you think, and make you never see beauty the same way again.

About the Author

Libba Bray is the author of the 2010 Printz Award winning Going Bovine, and the acclaimed Gemma Doyle trilogy. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.

Beauty Queens is a blistering and hysterical satire on, oh so many aspects of our beauty and fame obsessed culture: reality TV, the beauty industry, corporate controlled media, the easily duped public's short attention span, and of course, beauty pageants. The characters are hard to get to know because they do not know who they are. The recent high school grads see being authentic as a threat to their success in the world of fame and beauty. A few weeks trying to survive on an island after a plane crash helps the girls muster up the moral character, brains and gumption to take on the evils they encounter on the island: arms dealers, a rogue black ops group trying to get the US involved in a war to help get a CEO elected president, and a ship wrecked reality TV pirate ship filled with gorgeous young pirates. Sadly many teen girls who read Beauty Queens will miss most of the spot-on satire because they are living much it. Maybe the farce and buffoonery will give them some insight. Beauty Queens is a combination of Clueless, Legally Blonde, and Get Smart (the original of course). A very funny read with a great statement of truth.

This was, by far, my favorite book of 2012! Libba Bray created a fantastically satirical, fun, and feminist novel in Beauty Queens. The novel takes place on an allegedly deserted island after a plane full of teenage beauty queen contestants crashes there. Left to their own devices for their survival, we see the competitors from various viewpoints and just how carefully they construct their personas to reflect - or change - their inner realities. This is a spectacularly enjoyable feminist and anti-consumerist coming-of-age story full of empowerment for young women - something you don't see often, especially this well done.
