From Charlaine Harris, who created Sookie Stackhouse and her world of Bon Temps, comes a darker locale — populated more by strangers than friends. But then, that's how the locals prefer it. Welcome to Midnight, Texas, a town with many boarded-up windows and few full-time inhabitants. It's a pretty standard dried-up western town. Stop at the one traffic light, and everything looks normal. Stay awhile, and learn the truth. Midnight Crossroad (Ace) is the first novel in Harris's new trilogy.

The #1 New York Times Bestseller, with the original hardcover art.

Felipe de Castro, the vampire King of Louisiana (and Arkansas and Nevada), is in town. Its the worst possible time for a human body to show up in Eric Northmans front yard—especially the body of a woman whose blood he just drank. Now its up to Sookie and Bill, the official Area Five investigator, to solve the murder. Sookie thinks that, at least this time, the dead girls fate has nothing to do with her. But she is wrong. She has an enemy, one far more devious than she would ever suspect, who has set out to make Sookies world come crashing down.

"New York Times"-bestselling author Harris has delighted fans with her mystery series featuring small-town waitress-turned-paranormal sleuth Sookie Stackhouse. "Dead Until Dark" is her first novel in the series.

This was an enjoyable, easy read. I don't consider it a classic or anything, but Charlaine Harris does know how to have some fun with the well-worn vampire genre. (I'd say I liked it more than the Twilight books but not as much as early Anne Rice. It's more explicit and grownup than Stephenie Meyer's stuff, but not as dark as Rice's Lestat books.) The characters are interesting, the plot held more than a few surprises and the telepathic main character offers some creative possibilities for moving the story along.

Until last month, I lived in total ignorance of Sookie Stackhouse. Now, I'm almost current with all the books about her. She is a most engaging heroine! The stories become wilder with each installment, but our Sookie is as lovable and confused as ever. Wonderfully drawn world and fascinating characters. I haven't seen the HBO series, but the books are enough for me. Make sure to purchase the ones with the fabulous cover illustrations by Lisa Desimini. Each illustration depicts an actual moment in the tale. Sure hope Charlaine Harris has as much fun writing these as I have reading them.

These books are incredible! This series I think anyone can read because even though there's a lot to do with vampires and other fantastical creatures, there are real life issues that anyone can relate to. Plus they are a fast read because you get so sucked in and before you know it you're almost done with the series!
