Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

TEACHING PERCUSSION, which includes a free 2-DVD set with over 7 hours of footage, continues to set the standard in percussion instrument methods texts. Providing a comprehensive introduction to every aspect of percussion education, technique, and performance, this text helps students develop musical understanding and performance skills. The text's consistent and detailed philosophy introduces students to a refined teaching methodology, as well as a greater understanding of the learning process, by integrating contemporary concepts about experiential awareness learning.

Book News Annotation:

Cook (music and percussion studies, U. of Arizona) instructs future teachers in the pedagogical aspects of college percussion methods and techniques, such as basic percussion technique on the snare drum, keyboard percussion, timpani, bass drum, cymbals, drum set, and other instruments. Stressing experiential learning, he also comments on beginning a percussion program, method books, and instrument classification, and includes a list of pieces and orchestral excerpts and a discography. The new edition contains more information about percussion instruments from around the world, marching percussion and drum sets, musical examples, and further exercises. A two-DVD set, which features live demonstrations, accompanies the text. Other contributors to the book are musicians and educators from the US and Trinidad.
