Publisher Comments:

When June's mother dies, she is invited to join a long-standing club of Chinese women who urge her not only to take her mother's place at the mah-jongg table, but also to carry the news of her mother's death to her step-sisters in China. Through the stories of the women and their daughters, the values of different generations are articulated. June's anxiety about her responsibility to the past is contrasted with the older women's concerns that their values and culture are being lost by their Americanized daughters.

"So beutifully written that one should...allow oneself to be bourne along as if in a dream...a jewel of a book." The New York Times Book Review

"The Joy Luck Club is a pure joy to read." Chicago Tribune

The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan is the story of four Chinese woman and the relationships they have with their daughters. The woman, though more commonly referred to as "aunts", were all raised with traditional Chinese beliefs while their daughters were raised to be "all American". Throughout the story, you delve further into both the mothers and daughters pasts and see how strained some of their relationships are with one another. As someone who is not very fond of Tan's other novels, I was quite surprised at how much I enjoyed this book. Though it is rather slow at some parts and can be confusing trying to keep up with some of the Chinese words that get casually thrown in, it does a very good job at portraying Chinese culture and has a beautiful message of trying to remember what's important in life. Each chapter is a different characters story and the further you get into the novel, the more you start to see everything get pieced together. The story has beautiful, and almost poetic, style of writing and Tan does a rather good job of character development and timing. Overall, I would give this story a 4/5 and I strongly recommend that others read it as well.
