My family was always loving and caring, as most are, and I have neglected on realizing that not all families are like that. I have taken this for granted, and never truly realized the importance of a family’s unity and their ability to be successful in providing each other with care, pride, and sympathy. Falling Leaves, by Adeline Yen Mah, helped me realize my gratitude towards my own family and the power of a close relationship. The narrator, Adeline, faces the corruption of her family after her father remarries in 1942.
Adeline Yen Mah’s Falling Leaves pierced my heart with her tales of her childhood in a dramatic, haunting memoir, making these situations come to life, and reminding me of what it means to be unloved. The most intense part in my opinion was when Adeline sees the beating of her half-sister, Susan, while nobody dared to intervene. Susan was punished by her mother, Niang, because she did not recognize her after not seeing her in years. “…to my horror, Niang set her child down on the couch besides her and gave her a stinging slap across the face…We had witnessed a whole new side of her character, with Grandmother gone, she alone was in total control.(46-47)”
In the world we live in today, many children have suffered from abuse, and this memoir changed my perspective on what was really going on in their lives, and the significant impact it has on society. Adeline’s enduring faith kept me inspired, and this heartfelt tragedy made me flip through the pages with anticipation.
This was definitely a memoir that had me up all night, and it taught me what it meant to have a strongly united family, as well as how much it meant to be accepted and understood. I am still haunted by Adeline Yen Mah’s memoir.
