Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

With film rights acquired by Francis Ford Coppola, this comic novel of instant riches is back in stock. From the author of A Clockwork Orange, One Hand Clapping is a comedy of game shows and greed, high stakes and the high life. The tragi-comedy of used car salesman Howard Shirley, his photographic brain, and the modern world's trivia and trivialities makes for vintage Burgess—at once hilarious and provocative. "Witty and shrewdly joyful."—The New York Times Book Review "A funny, pointed novel."—The New Yorker "Ingeniously and devilishly funny."—The Atlantic Monthly

Synopsis:

Used car salesman Howard Shirley is watching England's most popular high-stakes TV quiz show with his wife, Janet, in their modest provincial house when it strikes him that his freakish "photographic brain" might make them an easy fortune. It also leads to first-class travel, luxury hotels, mink coats, some misguided philanthropy, and ultimately, outrageously, and comically, not entirely accidental death.

Talkatively and divertingly narrated from Janet's worldly perspective, the tragi-comedy of Howard, his one-of-a-kind mind, and the modern world's trivia and trivialities makes for vintage Burgess — at once hilarious and provocative.

Anthony Burgess is my favorite author, and this is my favorite novel of his (that I have read so far). It is a mysterious, interesting story told from a great point of view. This book will suck you in and keep you thinking long after you have finished.
