This small and beautifully-produced book is a charming and informative introduction to the history of writing. Its reproductions of cuneiform tablets, Egyptian pictographs, and illuminated manuscripts makes it intriguing to curious young book lovers as well as to adults. The text is informative, and in some cases detailed, but at heart, this is a browser's book, one to be picked up over and over. I have used Writing: The Story of Alphabets... as a supplementary text book in writing and editing classes and have given it over and over again as a gift book: it never fails to delight.
