Publisher Comments:

Last Night's Fun's is a sparking celebration of music and life that is itself a literary performance of the highest order. Carson's inspired jumble of recording history, poetry, tall tales, and polemic captures the sound and vigor of a ruthlessly unsentimental music. Last Night's Fun is remarkable for its liveliness, honesty, scholarship, and spontaneous joy; certainly there has never been a book about Irish music like this one, and few books ever written anywhere about the experience of music can compare with it.

About the Author

Ciaran Carson was born in 1948 in Belfast and works for the Arts Council of Northern Ireland. He is the author of The Pocket Guide to Irish Music, The Star Factory, as well as five collections of poetry, one of which, First Language, was awarded the T.S. Eliot Prize.

If you play traditional Irish music, or simply enjoy listening, you will be completely captivated by this book. Each chapter is the name of an Irish fiddle tune: Last Night's Fun, The Steampacket, The Hurler In the Ditch, Dowd's No. 9, The Dead Man's Britches. Written by a masterful writer and a musician, you will travel around the back roads Ireland with him, hunt for the best music session, listen to the stories, learn tunes from the old folks while your cassette recorder captures the moment, stagger out of a pub to greet the rising sun, breathe the turf smoke in a tiny rural home, find a real Irish breakfast, and learn to hear the turn of phrase as the bow dances across the fiddle strings in a crowded Dublin pub. This is a great book for all who love Irish music, or wish to learn to.
