It is important to realize when reading this excellent book which is a play that is based on the original book by Neihardt, that one is aware that critics have cited that Neidhardt may have altered the real words of Black Elk because it was more convenient and expedient to do so to make the book more readable.
Also it is important to realize that this an autobiography of Black Elk and as such is not a treatise on the true sprituality of the American Indians. It is a limitation but does not take away any value of the book.
This work is one of the most important to read as it is a critical basis for obtaining a true understanding of the American Indians and their culture.
