Book News Annotation:

This reader brings together scholarly perspectives from the fields of political science, international relations, international law, policy studies, and comparative politics on international environmental institutions, laws, and policies at the beginning of the 21st century. Editors Axelrod (political science, Adelphi U.), VanDeveer (political science, U. of New Hampshire), and Downie (politics and environmental studies, Fairfield U.) first present papers on international institutions and regimes that discuss the evolution of global institutions, the role of international law in environmental protection, regimes of environmental governance, and the role of environmental non-governmental organizations in international regimes. Cases and questions of global environmental policy are examined next in chapters that address multilevel international governance of global warming, global politics and the policy of hazardous chemicals, economic integration and environmental protection, and compliance with global environmental policy. The remaining chapters explore issues of policy implementation, including US unilateralism in environmental politics, policy making in the European Union, developing countries' perspectives, energy and environmental policy in China, nuclear power in the Czech Republic, and the environmental ramifications of consumption and commodity chains.
