Publisher Comments:

There is a basic human wisdom that can help solve the worlds problems. It doesnt belong to any one culture or region or religious traditionthough it can be found in many of them throughout history. Its what Chögyam Trungpa called the sacred path of the warrior. The sacred warrior conquers the world not through violence or aggression, but through gentleness, courage, and self-knowledge. The warrior discovers the basic goodness of human life and radiates that goodness out into the world for the peace and sanity of others. Thats what the Shambhala teachings are all about, and this is the book that has been presenting them to a wide and appreciative audience for more than twenty years.

Synopsis:

A Shambhala Classics edition of the classic guide to enlightened living that first presented the Buddhist path of the warrior to Western readers.

In this best-selling guide to enlightened living, Chögyam Trungpameditation master, teacher, and artistoffers an inspiring vision for our time. In ancient times, the warrior acquired a sense of courage and powernot through violence or aggression, but through gentleness, courage, and self-knowledge. Interpreting the warriors journey in contemporary terms, Trungpa shows that through discovering the basic goodness of human life, the warrior learns to radiate that goodness out into the world for the peace and sanity of others.

This book is a gem in that it addresses the questions of living a life full of meaning, magic, awareness, and love without the constrictions of a strictly Buddhist approach. Trungpa's language is clear, accessible, yet deeply moving. I often found myself highlighting sections of the book, passionately writing in the margins, "Yes! I AM this sacred warrior, full of fearlessness through my tenderness!" Here and there, technical language from a specifically Tibetan tradition of Shambhala is incorporated, but by and large, the text is geared towards a modern reader who needs no background in religion or philosophy. Anyone striving to reconnect with their sense of courage, authenticity, and basic appreciation of life would enjoy this book.
