Synopsis:

Sumptuous poems about South Asian women from the author of Mistress of Spices and Sister of My Heart.

Synopsis:

Poetry. Asian American Studies. A revised edition of this popular book of poetry. Chitra Divakaruni evokes the sounds, smells, tastes, sights of South Asian culture. Told in a woman's voice, these poems create a mindscape of a woman's experience, their hold both tenuous and graceful. The world in this book is a necklace of bright pearls that burns the skin, yet is... fastened to the body with a jeweled clasp: the compassion of Divakaruni's fiercely seeing heart — Jane Hirshfield.

I have been joyously reading the poetry collections of Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni, and I am simply blown away. Her poetry is so refreshing and wonderfully enriching to the landscape of poetry written on American soil. Because I was born and raised in a foreign country and because I am also from California, I can also see how important her poetry is to a nation has such a diverse mix of ethnicities and nationalities. Her poems are truly timeless renditions of the realities of Indians in their native land and Indian immigrants--realities shared by so many other individuals in our rapidly globalizing world. I highly recommend this poetry collection, for anyone with a passion for poetry and a passion for understanding the cultural traditions of the world. I especially appreciate that her poems are honest; Divakaruni does not seek to romanticize certain cultural practices, and she narratives in a voice that is not overly sentimental or full of sensationalism. She is careful not to humiliate or judge or condemn, but she is also confident in her critique and questioning of what is often done to women (perhaps even done by women) of Indian origin. Her poems urge us to be more considerate in the way we live, to recognize the humanity of all people, to put this humanity first before religion/culture/power. I hail her for her strong voice and bold heart!
