Publisher Comments:

Great photographs change the way we see the world; The Ongoing Moment changes the way we look at both. Focusing on the ways in which canonical figures like Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Walker Evans, André Kertész, Edward Weston, Dorothea Lange, Diane Arbus, and William Eggleston have photographed the same things—barber shops, benches, hands, roads, signs-award-winning writer Geoff Dyer seeks to identify their signature styles. In doing so, he constructs a narrative in which these photographers-many of whom never met-constantly encounter one another. The result is a kaleidoscopic work of extraordinary originality and insight.

About the Author

Geoff Dyer is the author of three novels, a critical study of John Berger, and four genre-defying books, including But Beautiful, which was awarded the Somerset Maugham Prize, and Out of Sheer Rage, which was a National Book Critics Circle Award finalist. The winner of a Lannan Literary Award, the International Center of Photography's 2006 Infinity Award for writing on photography, and the American Academy of Arts and Letters' E. M. Forster Award, Dyer lives in London.

First off, I'm not exactly a photography buff, least of all an expert.

Thought I ought to throw that out there. Of course, neither is "Ongoing" author, Geoff Dyer. Dyer doesn't even own a camera--an admission he makes within the first few pages of his captivating book on photography. What Dyer is an expert on is writing. An expert on uncovering images and examining restless ideas.

"Ongoing" is an unusual book--not only for Dyer fans, but for photogs. Dyer fans will walk into this book looking for the author. (And it's hard to blame them . . . he's got wit and he's whip smart.) But this time, Dyer takes himself out of the equation--save for a few choice moments. This time, he's put pictures out in front.

For photogs, Dyer readily admits that adding to the photography cannon ain't easy. Trying seems like a fool's errand, but he offers an alternate paradigm: arranging the book by subject, not year (necessarily) or photographer or even style. (An approach that proved accessible and welcoming, actually, to a photography novice like me. Like stacking blocks by color. Yes, he makes it look that easy.)

Dyer considers images of benches, blind beggars, and hats--among other things. He examines how photographers seem to "speak" to one another through their Art. How the photographs continue to speak, repeating moments, long after their creators are gone.

You don't have to enjoy photography or even Geoff Dyer to enjoy this book. You have to love ideas. After reading "Ongoing," I found myself looking for Stieglitz pictures at the Tate. For O'Keefe nudes. Like a photography buff or something. What can I say?

That's what good books do. They make you think.
