Publisher Comments:

This text, Ethics, Legal Issues and Professionalism for Surgical Technology is intended to introduce the student to key non-technical aspects of professional practice. It is necessary to understand and apply these concepts in addition to the daily technical functions in the OR and other departments that work with surgery, such as radiology, lab services and central sterile processing. Ethical and legal issues arise daily. Surgical Technologists need the foundation in these principles to make the right decisions and perform in a manner that renders the highest quality patient care possible. Professional behaviors are crucial for any health care worker. The first two sections will enable the student to develop a base of knowledge in the fundamentals of ethics and legal issues. In addition, section one includes a theory on moral reasoning, human value development and the bio-psychosocial needs of the patient. Specific ethical controversial topics will be introduced for analyzing. Section two covers legal terminology, sources and types of law, legal doctrines, liabilities, etc. Section three focuses on professional practice and exposes the student to the basic knowledge and behaviors a professional must have. Each chapter begins with key terminology and objectives. The end of each chapter will include a summary, review questions and a case study for discussion and debate.
