Publisher Comments:

Families are constantly bombarded with transitions and life events which result in varying degrees of stress. From all indications, families are increasingly living with a constant sense of insecurity and stress resulting from a variety of economic concerns, war and its aftermath, natural disasters, health issues, parenting, aging, divorce, death, violence, and various forms of discrimination. These stressors have a major impact on how families function. Therefore, it is increasingly important that researchers, educators, and practitioners posses the needed knowledge to study, teach, and work with families. This book contributes to this need by integrating scholarship from a variety of disciplines in order to address the most common problems facing contemporary families.

This book represents an integration of research, theory, and application and is intended to serve as a basic or supplementary text for undergraduate and introductory graduate courses on families or social problems. It will also be useful to professionals, novices, and those with considerable experience, who work with families who are confronting a multitude of problems. Each chapter presents an overview of our current understanding of selected family transitions and stressors, as well as mechanisms and resources for intervention and additional resources including readings and websites.

Book News Annotation:

Instructors of social work and other helping and social sciences describe approaches and techniques for intervening with families undergoing stress. Among the topics are conceptualizing parental stress with family stress theory, stress and coping in later life, illness and family stress, alcohol and substance abuse, economic stress, the development and functioning of families with lesbian or gay parents, African American families, homeless families, everyday hassles, and military life. The textbook was first published in 1994, and is revised periodically to reflect current thinking. Annotation ©2010 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
