Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Unlike most other poetry anthologies, arranged only chronologically or limited to the exploration of one type of poem, Jay Parini's WADSWORTH ANTHOLOGY OF POETRY collects 24 smaller, more accessible anthologies in one volume. With the guidance of an editorial board of pre-eminent literary scholars and world-renown poets, Parini has offers a meaningful structure to an ambitious collection, spanning from Beowulf to Jorie Graham. More a teaching and learning text than a definitive body of work, Parini's arrangement of poetry by form, content, and context offers a new way of looking at the teaching of poetry.

About the Author

Celebrated poet, novelist, essayist, and anthologist Jay Parini is the series editor for Scribner's American Writer's Series, British Writers Series, and new American Classics Series, and, most recently, the Oxford Encyclopedia of American Literature. Jay Parini has taught for over 25 years at Dartmouth College and Oxford University and is currently the director of the Creative Writing Program at Middlebury College. He is well respected in the field and known widely for his scholarly work, as well as for his work in national publications such as The New York Times and the Nation.
