Synopsis:

In these edgy, elegant poems, Éireann Lorsung seeks balance in her world between the need for permanence and the heady seductiveness of the moment. Her intuitive knowledge of poetic form (line breaks, enjambment, repetition, punctuation) and her strong poetic voice channel some of the genres greats while remaining distinctive. From the prayer-like musicality of “All Through the Night,” to the visually dynamic “Oceanside,” to the theatrical “Bird Woman, Duck Hunting,” these poems exhibit a visceral creativity that establishes the author as a major new voice in the field.

A work of art, this very readable book of poems speaks the truth about what it’s like to be alive. Evocative and heartfelt, the author distills her experiences into clear imagery and sounds. If ever you doubt, this is the kind of poetry that has the power to save. Reading it for the first time on a plane, I had the urge to stand up and read aloud to everyone around me.

The title of the poem ‘The Way to Really Love It’ is perhaps more descriptive of the work than the book's title. The poems demonstrate a way of being fully engaged, of saying ‘yes’ even in the face of pain and loss. There is sense of keen observation, showing an awareness of environment, personal and cultural history and relationships. Many people live amazing lives, but not many use their experience to create and share something so powerful as Eireann Lorsung has in her first book.
