Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

This expanded and revised edition of a fresh and original case-study textbook on environmental ethics begins with a lucid overview of the field, highlighting the key developments and theories in the environmental movement. Specific cases offer a rich and diverse range of situations from around the globe, from saving the forests of Java and the use of pesticides in developing countries to restoring degraded ecosystems in Nebraska.

Book News Annotation:

This is the second edition of an introductory environmental ethics casebook first published in 2003. Fourteen case studies concerning different environmental issues from around the globe are presented along with commentary and questions for discussion. Four new cases have been added to this edition, one concerning water privatization, another on government efforts to combat global warming, and two involving barriers to teaching environmental ethics in classrooms. The original case studies have been updated. Ethical dilemmas discussed include underground nuclear waste disposal, protection of cultural traditions versus the preservation of threatened ecosystems, hydro power at the expense of free flowing rivers, and desertification in China. An appendix describes the use of the case study method to teach environmental ethics. Gudorf and Huchingson are professors of religious studies at Florida International University.
