Synopses & Reviews

Synopsis:

Wordsworth Classics covers a huge list of beloved works of literature in English and translations. This growing series is rigorously updated, with scholarly introductions and notes added to new titles.

Synopsis:

Set in London in the last decade of the 19th century, this is an ironic tale of the seedy "demi-monde" of espionage, counter-espionage and the miseries inflicted on innocent and simple people by political extremism. It draws on Conrad's own emotional background and experience.

A wry and sly narrative from Conrad. It is easy to guess most of the plot fairly early on; characterization and the characters' ways of attempting to understand the situation are the more interesting reasons to keep reading. I did find myself attempting to diagnose Stevie, and comparisons and contrasts to "Of Mice and Men's" Lennie are inevitable.
