Powerlines: A Decade of Poetry from Chicago's Guild Complex Cover

Staff Pick

An amazing compilation from Chicago's weekly poetry readings at the Guild Complex, the award-winning, cross-cultural literary center. Revolutionary chants and resonating love poetry presented by a diverse group, including Carolyn Kizer, Bob Holman, Adrienne Rich, Quincy Troupe, Wanda Coleman, Patricia Smith, and Yusef Komunyakaa. Studs Terkel says the Guild Complex represents in the writers and performers the vision of a city of flesh and blood, men and women, rather than a city of things.

One of my very favorite anthologies of American poetry: it contains such a wide range of voices, all tied together by a sense of place. These poems breathe Chicago.
