Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

Sámi culture has undergone powerful changes recently.  Traditions have been integrated with contemporary influences and perspectives.  New kinds of Sámi participation and activism have evolved including innovative politics, informative media, expressive art and literature.

Accommodating internal and external changes is nothing novel to the Sámi.  The dialogue between what is traditional and what is modern is a natural part of their development towards the maintenance of Sámi cultural distinctness.

Book News Annotation:

In this translation of the revised Finnish edition, Lehtola (U. of Oulu) traces the evolving culture of his people (also known by outsiders by the disdained term Lapps). He discusses many aspects of the diverse aboriginal culture, and identifies S<'a>pmi, the S<'a>mi homeland, as the basis for the formation of a unified national identity. The study includes images of traditional and modern S<'a>mi culture, a glossary of place names, and a list of publications by/about the S<'a>mi in several languages.
