Ellen Urbani: IMG Like Every Other Survivor

I have an uncommon penchant for aligning myself with disaster and death. Tornadoes and wildfires and armed guerrillas have chased me. Riptides... Continue »

Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

A debut novel which was an unequivocal critical success in trade paperback, and which was shortlisted for the Guardian First Book Award. Set at the fugitive edges of Asia and Europe, this is a highly imaginative and memorable debut, which combines a multitude of elements, locations and characters to great effect. "One of the best first novels I've read for a long time" A.S. Byatt.

Synopsis:

An apocalyptic cult member carries out a gas attack on a rush-hour metro, but what connects him to a jazz buff in downtown Tokyo? A woman on a holy mountain talks to a tree - and the tree talks back, unaware of the effect of the financial irregularities of a burnt-out lawyer will have on her life.

There are few books that I re-read. This is one of them. As I recall, this is Mitchell's first published novel. He started with a BANG! And, though I've read all of his subsequent novels, I'd say this is his best, with Cloud Atlas as a possible very close second.
But is Ghostwritten the book of the decade?
Think back. How many books that you read, say, 6 or 7 years ago do you remember? I'd be willing to bet that if you had read this one, you would long remember it. It' that good.
