Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

In a lively blend of pop culture history, political manifesto, and investigative analysis, The Rebel Sell examines the birth of the rebel consumer. Asserting that the counterculture is not against consumerism, but is one of the main driving forces of consumerism, this destined-to-be controversial book examines the history of the rebel sell-from the first rebranding of the Volkswagen to the lifestyle statement of the hippies.

If Neo were offered a choice of buying the red or green pill, which one would allow him to get out of the consumer matrix? This book argues "neither." But branding experts know that we long to be different, so they sell us that image. "Hi, we're Wal-mart and if you buy organic pajamas from us you'll be keeping tons of pesticides from the world's oceans." Hmm... but if I don't buy, won't I be doing the same thing?

I got to read my roommate's Canadian version. The US version is called "Nation of Rebels".
