Lifelong Learning and Social Justice - Communities, Work and Identities in a Globalised World

Lifelong Learning and Social Justice - Communities, Work and Identities in a Globalised World Cover

Synopses & Reviews

Book News Annotation:

In the era of neoliberal globalization life-long learning, in the guise of knowledge for its own sake or personal exploration, is often a euphemism for strategies of cultivating and maintaining worker flexibility. This book challenges that relationship, arguing both against life-long learning as a response to economic imperatives and for a social justice orientation. Divided into two sections and several chapters, the first explores the interaction between life-long learning and sustainable communities when both are oriented toward social justice; the second takes a critical view of learning that is promoted, pursued and praised according to a rubric of employability. A final section takes up more critical views about identities, subjectivities and gender. The contributors include doctoral students, teachers, researchers and other practitioners from around the world, mostly outside of the US and in English-speaking countries, with backgrounds in sociology, education & life-long learning, and social justice. Distributed in the US by ISBS. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
