Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

He is Hamlet, Prince of Denmark; she is simply Ophelia. If you think you know their story, think again.

In this reimagining of Shakespeare's famous tragedy, it is Ophelia who takes center stage. A rowdy, motherless girl, she grows up at Elsinore Castle to become the queen's most trusted lady-in-waiting. Ambitious for knowledge and witty as well as beautiful, Ophelia learns the ways of power in a court where nothing is as it seems. When she catches the attention of the captivating, dark-haired Prince Hamlet, their love blossoms in secret. But bloody deeds soon turn Denmark into a place of madness, and Ophelia's happiness is shattered. Ultimately, she must choose between her love for Hamlet and her own life. In desperation, Ophelia devises a treacherous plan to escape from Elsinore forever...with one very dangerous secret.

Lisa Klein's Ophelia tells the story of a young woman falling in love, searching for her place in the world, and finding the strength to survive. Sharp and literary, dark and romantic, this dramatic story holds readers in its grip until the final, heartrending scene.

Review:

"Ophelia the character is playful and bold; her banter with Hamlet is witty, and often their repartee features wordplay and double entendre that would have made the Bard happy." Kirkus Reviews

Review:

"[T]eens encountering the characters for the first time will be swept up by the vivid, atmospheric setting, the heart-pounding romance." Booklist

Synopsis:

Those who think they know the story of Ophelia and Hamlet can think again, because when bloody deeds turn the court of Elsinore into a place of treachery and madness, Ophelia alone will find the means to escape, with nothing more than the clothes on her back . . . and one very dangerous secret.

About the Author

Lisa Klein was always dissatisfied with interpretations of Ophelia and so took it upon herself to breathe new life into the story of Ophelia. She is a former professor of English who lives in Columbus, Ohio with her husband and two sons. This is her first work of fiction.

This book blew me away. As it deals with issues of justice more than revenge, with more completeness of a character than romance. My favorite thing about the novel, though, was the dialogue. I thought was so realistic, meaning what would have been spoken in the early seventeenth century. Add castles, adventure, romance, murder and fleeing for your life, and you have an amazing story.Expanding on the romance between its hero and Ophelia, who narrates this version keeping true to the structure of the play, the hero, now 16, reports the tragic events in the troubled Elsinore castle. Her mother is dead, and that loss is what makes her turn to women who can be substitutes for the one person who would have loved her unreservedly and completely.

Oh how i loved this book!! Klein is a brilliant woman and i will be sure to recomened her to all my friends. Since the book is wrote from a young girls views I can relate. Ophelia is beautiful and witty, a person who every yound girl wishes to be. Ophelia is strong and brave. I really do hope she will write a second book. Since her first one kept on wondering, and since Shakespear isnt around to write any more Klein should finish his noble writings. I hope with all my heart she will write a sequal to this story. I hope she still writes it from Ophelias point of view too.
