Stars and Stripes: The Story of the American Flagby Sarah L. Thomson
Synopses & ReviewsPublisher Comments:Schools, parades, post offices, and the moon. These are just some of the places we see the American flag. Fifty stars stand for the states that make up this country. Thirteen stripes remind us of the colonies that fought for their freedom. But the flag has not always looked the way it does today. Its history is as colored and rich as our country's past. Yet despite the ways the flag has changed in the past two hundred years, the pride, unity, and strength it inspires have never faltered. STARS AND STRIPES: The Story of the American Flag invites readers to travel back in time and witness firsthand how our flag came to be. Synopsis:Did you know that the American flag was . . . -- once made out of scraps and rags? -- decorated with a fierce rattlesnake? -- flown from treetops? -- the inspiration for our national anthem? The history of the American flag is as colorful and complex as our country's past. Yet despite the way the flag has changed, the pride, unity, and strength it inspires in Americans have never faltered. Dramatic illustrations and spare text invite readers to explore the origins and symbolism of our flag. Synopsis:"Stars and Stripes" celebrates the history and symbolism of the flag. Full color.
About the AuthorSarah L. Thomson is the author of two previous novels for young readers. The Dragon's Son, a retelling of the King Arthur story, was a Junior Library Guild selection and was chosen as one of the Best Books of the Year by the Bank Street College of Education. The Washington Postdescribed The Manny, a comedy about a boy nanny, as having "a plot worthy of Jane Austen." Sarah Thomson managed to graduate as an English major without ever taking a class on Shakespeare (or Marlowe, for that matter), but she did travel to London to research The Secret of the Rose, visiting the reconstructed Globe Theatre. A former editor with a major children's book publisher, she lives in Portland, Maine. What Our Readers Are SayingBe the first to add a comment for a chance to win!Product Details
