Publisher Comments:

With extraordinary narrative power, New York Times bestselling author Colleen McCullough sweeps the reader into a whirlpool of pageantry and passion, bringing to vivid life the most glorious epoch in human history.

When the world cowered before the legions of Rome, two extraordinary men dreamed of personal glory: the military genius and wealthy rural "upstart" Marius, and Sulla, penniless and debauched but of aristocratic birth. Men of exceptional vision, courage, cunning, and ruthless ambition, separately they faced the insurmountable opposition of powerful, vindictive foes. Yet allied they could answer the treachery of rivals, lovers, enemy generals, and senatorial vipers with intricate and merciless machinations of their own—to achieve in the end a bloody and splendid foretold destiny . . . and win the most coveted honor the Republic could bestow.

This is the first in a series of books on Rome by Colleen McCullough. They start in about 120BC and continue to the death of Anthony and Cleopatra. McCullough is a marvelous writer with a superb knowledge of history. A person feels like they know the characters personally because of her style and knowledge. This book covers a period in the time of Caesar's grandparents. The "First Man in Rome" is among the best books I have ever read and I am now on the fourth in the series; where Caesar has become an adult. My only criticism is not of the author; it is of the Roman habit of everyone having similar names which is aggravated by frequent divorces that are motivated primarily by political or social climbing ambition. You almost have to have a play book to keep track of the cast. I first read "Caesar's Women" which is from the middle of the series, and this actually made it a little easier to understand the "First Man In Rome." This is really great stuff for history buffs - I love it.
