And coming next month, more unforgettable romance inthe Cynster Sisters Trilogy

Review:

"Romance veteran Laurens opens a trilogy with her 16th Regency featuring the tony Cynster family (after Temptation and Surrender). Heather, 25 and unmarried, decides to take control of her future before she is declared 'on the shelf.' Never a shrinking violet, Heather sneaks into a society soiree hoping to meet the man of her dreams. Instead, she draws the attention of renowned rake Timothy Danvers, Viscount Breckenridge. Though handsome and charming, Heather feels Breckenridge is too old and too patronizing, especially when he condescendingly evicts her from the party. When thugs kidnap Heather, Breckenridge takes off in hot pursuit; after he catches up, Heather persuades him to stick close by and try to learn the kidnappers' motives. Laurens's fans will enjoy this tale of vile villains, a repentant rake, and a sassy spinster. (Sept.)" Publishers Weekly Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.

Strange to read a Regency Romance where so much of the book (most!) takes place away from the watchful eyes of the ton.

It is very clearly stated on the cover "Three heroes, three rescues, three weddings." So we know there will be three stories (luckily for us, 3 novels). Because the stories involve Cynster females, there will be headstrong, beautiful women and danger. We also know there will be a happy ending.

I guess this trilogy has a "formula" but really, don't most romance books? The details of time period and the characters are what draw us in and Ms. Laurens has this firmly mastered. We're allowed to visit a well established series from a different point of view and this novel lets us visit Scotland with a stop at The Vale. While we know there will be a wedding, the journey is what makes this book memorable. Not just the kidnapping and rescue but the inner path each takes. I loved reading the unvoiced thoughts and really wanted to shake some sense into Breckenridge and Heather.

So formula or not, Viscount Breckenridge to the Rescue starts with a kidnapping, follows with a chase across borders, a rescue, involves a huge learning curve, and an unlikely introduction to who could only be the Earl of Glencrae.

Started the book Friday evening, finished it early Saturday. Even though I knew there will be a wedding, had to know how the book ended before heading for sleep.

This is the first Cynster novel I have read, so I was not sure what to think. The description sounded interesting so I decided to give it a try. I am glad I did because it was a lot of fun.

Heather and the Viscount Breckenridge are as close to opposites as you can find, at least at first. Heather is a proper young lady on the verge of being put on the shelf and Breckenridge is a notorious rake. They have known each other for years and he has always been protective of her in that annoying older brother way, which is what leads him to remove her from the scandalous soiree she ventures into. Only to witness her kidnapping but be too far away to interfere.

I enjoyed the first half of the novel without reservation. The story and characters were fun and interesting. The element of mystery kept me wondering all the way through. I am still wondering about that not-particularly-villainous villain...Is it weird that I want to read a book about him?

My only problem was with the second half of the book. There was a lot more sex than I felt comfortable with once you reached a certain point. Before that point, the romance was really cute with their tensest moment happening when Breckenridge helps Heather with her new boots. (A really sweet scene, by the way.) I would have preferred that Breckenridge act gentlemanly rather than Heather turn rakish, but it did not ruin the story for me.

The conversations between Breckenridge and Heather were a lot of fun. Heather is a hopeless romantic and Breckenridge is...not. At least, not verbally. I enjoyed watching Heather try to coax some sort of declaration of affection out of him while he remained completely stubborn. They make a lovely couple.

I would recommend this book to lovers of light, fun romance.
