Synopses & Reviews

Publisher Comments:

A dazzling novel in the most untraditional fashion, this is the remarkable story of Henry DeTamble, a dashing, adventuresome librarian who travels involuntarily through time, and Clare Abshire, an artist whose life takes a natural sequential course. Henry and Clare's passionate love affair endures across a sea of time and captures the two lovers in an impossibly romantic trap, and it is Audrey Niffenegger's cinematic storytelling that makes the novel's unconventional chronology so vibrantly triumphant.

An enchanting debut and a spellbinding tale of fate and belief in the bonds of love, The Time Traveler's Wife is destined to captivate readers for years to come.

Synopsis:

This extraordinary, magical novel is the story of Clare and Henry who have known each other since Clare was 6 and Henry was 36, and were married when Clare was 22 and Henry 30. Impossible but true, because Henry is one of the first people diagnosed with Chrono-Displacement Disorder: periodically his genetic clock resets and he finds himself pulled suddenly into his past or future. His experiences are alternately harrowing and amusing. They struggle to lead normal lives in the face of a force they can neither prevent nor control. "I was ridiculously entranced by Audrey Niffenegger's big, reckless novel...utterly convincing" "Daily Telegraph"

I know this book is almost 10 years old now - and I haven't seen the movie - but I read it again in 2011 and found it to be just as enjoyable. Such a creative idea about a guy with an unwanted supernatural affliction - it doesn't really feel scifi it's so believable (and I do enjoy good scifi). Niffenegger's voice and story kept me leafing through for inspiration with my own creative writing aspirations.

It is difficult to explain the impact this book has had for me. In my process of grieving for the loss of my wife, there are many aspects of this tale that resonated with me. It has assisted me in my process. The waiting, the living with watching the deterioration of a loved one and the love that pervades throughout. I thank Audrey Niffenegger for this wonderful creation.
