Synopsis:

For generations, the Beaumont family has harbored a magical secret. They each possess a savvy--a supernatural power they acquire at 13. On the eve of Mibs's big day, she finds herself on an unforgettable odyssey that will force her to make sense of growing up.

Synopsis:

Nine years after Mibs's Savvy journey, her cousin Ledge has just turned thirteen . . .

But Ledger Kale's savvy is a total dud-all he does is make little things fall apart. So his parents decide it's safe to head to Wyoming, where it's soon revealed that Ledge's savvy is much more powerful than anyone thought. Worse, his savvy disaster has an outside witness: Sarah Jane Cabot, reporter wannabe and daughter of the local banker. Just like that, Ledge's beloved normal life is over. Now he has to keep Sarah from turning family secrets into headlines, stop her father from foreclosing on Uncle Autry's ranch, and scumble his savvy into control so that, someday, he can go home.

Starring a cast both fresh and familiar, Scumble brilliantly melds Ingrid Law's signature heart and humor with the legendary Wild West.

Synopsis:

Thirteen is when a Beaumont’s savvy hits—and with one brother who causes hurricanes and another who creates electricity, Mibs Beaumont is eager to see what she gets. But just before the big day, Poppa is in a terrible accident. And now all Mibs wants is a savvy that will save him. In fact, Mibs is so sure she’ll get a powerful savvy that she sneaks a ride to the hospital on a rickety bus with her sibling and the preacher’s kids in tow. After this extraordinary adventure—full of talking tattoos and a kidnapping—not a soul on board will ever be the same.

Ingrid Law writes of the disasters and magic of becoming a teenager. Mibs discovers her magical powers (her savvy) in the wide open plains of Nebraska. Hers is a world of bible salesmen, talking tattoos, and family. The book is quickly paced and easy to read. If I had a tween, I would foist the book on her. Because I don't, I can only gently recommend the book to all the youngsters I meet.

Teens and tweens discovering their own talents will adore the Beaumont family. Each member of the family is gifted a "savvy" on their thirteenth birthday. Some get sweet savvy like the ability to capture a song or a tune in a jar for enjoying years later. Others have such chaotic savvy that the family lives a fairly solitary life. Mibs is turning thirteen, and is finding out what her savvy will be . . . and learns not only how to work with her savvy, but how to assist others by using her gift. This is one of those stories that will provoke the questions, "What gift, talent, or "savvy" do I have? How am I using it?" It's also a terrific story of family unity, loyalty and love.
