You can change your brain! Neuroplasticity is the new gospel for remapping your brain and making real changes to not only the way you think but how your brain is actually wired. Using this new science, medical conditions previously thought of as untreatable are cured, damaged sense organs are restored, and learning disorders are solved. If stroke patients can learn to walk and talk again in spite of damaged brains, then surely there is hope for the rest of us to manage our daily anxieties and undesirable behaviors. Dive into the future of neuroscience with this amazing book.

Publisher Comments:

An astonishing new science called neuroplasticity is overthrowing the centuries-old notion that the human brain is immutable. Psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, Norman Doidge, M.D., traveled the country to meet both the brilliant scientists championing neuroplasticity and the people whose lives theyve transformed people whose mental limitations or brain damage were seen as unalterable. We see a woman born with half a brain that rewired itself to work as a whole, blind people who learn to see, learning disorders cured, IQs raised, aging brains rejuvenated, stroke patients learning to speak, children with cerebral palsy learning to move with more grace, depression and anxiety disorders successfully treated, and lifelong character traits changed.

Using these marvelous stories to probe mysteries of the body, emotion, love, sex, culture, and education, Dr. Doidge has written an immensely moving, inspiring book that will permanently alter the way we look at our brains, human nature, and human potential.

An astonishing new science called neuroplasticity is overthrowing the centuries-old notion that the human brain is immutable, and proving that it is, in fact, possible to change your brain. Psychoanalyst, Norman Doidge, M.D., traveled the country to meet both the brilliant scientists championing neuroplasticity, its healing powers, and the people whose lives they’ve transformed—people whose mental limitations, brain damage or brain trauma were seen as unalterable. Fascinating, inspiring, and at times jaw-dropping. Well written, easily understand, and encouraged further questioning and wondering.

This is a triumphantly good book. Good because it presents a fascinating, complex subject in a simple and compelling way, in clear and elegant language; triumphant because it brings to our attention the astounding potential we all carry around with us in our skulls, every single day of our lives, and reveals stories of individual, personal triumphs of neuroplasticity and human flexibility.

Dr. Doidge has accomplished something really special with this book. Here is an education in the modern understandings of neuroplasticity presented for the layperson. Here also are thrilling stories of brave patients and risk-taking scientists, a history of nervous system paradigms and how they have shaped the realm of the possible in brain science, exciting new revelations, and dozens of "Aha!" moments. This brain of which he writes so compellingly, and which is capable of such miracles, is your brain and mine, and it's capable of much, much more than we've been giving it credit for. Read and be amazed at yourself.

I have recommended this book to dozens of friends. From my perspective, to be bold, this book should change your life. At minimum, it will change the way you think about the way you structure even the most mundane of your everyday activities. It's a fascinating bit of storytelling about the science behind the great capacities of the human mind. There is much to discover here.
